My dear Henry

I had an interview with Stilwell <1> Thursday & he explained some things but did not seem very clear about others – & very much recommended my seeing Mr King <2> who must of course know everything about the affairs, if anybody does. He accordingly asked him to come here yesterday but he could not & now he is to come Monday – I am anxious to talk to him before I leave town as I don’t know for how long it may be & I wish to tirer à clair <3> exactly what I shall have to live upon & I also want to settle about making my will which Mama several times impressed on me to do without loss of time that your interests might not suffer in case of my dying without having done it. Caroline <4> has been thinking it would not be a bad plan for them to take this house for the season, as they are so undecided when they will come – & she cannot be going about to look for houses. She mentioned it to Ld Mt E. <5> & he does not seem averse, but I don’t know whether difficulties about stables &c could be got over – & I am afraid he would find that bedroom very dismal, as he spends so much of his time in it. Of course if it could be managed it wd be a great relief to my mind for the present & I could settle more at leisure what to do with the poor dear old house, wh it wd go to my heart to part with – & all in that sudden manner – Tell me if there is anything you wish me to say to Mr King – & what you think about the house. Please to look for that key I gave you with New Patent written on the label & send it by Emma <6> as I want just to look into the table here to be sure there is nothing of consequence, & also the Furniture account book wh is with the others in that table, & I want to refer to. –

Poor dear Henry! how we thought of you this morning & all you must have gone through! I fear you will feel very lonely now at the Abbey but we cannot be with you before Tuesday indeed I hardly know how we shall be ready by that – but hope to be able to be a day or two with you & Caroline there alone before Constance <7> returns – which I am sure she would not take unkind but feel to be very natural.

Car. sends you her tender love –

Yr aff sister
Horatia
