Dr Sir

The notice inserted in the Gazette of your intention to apply to the Privy Council for a renewal of your photographic patent <1> having been brought under discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the Council of the Photographic Society, I am directed to ask you whether in the event of such renewal being granted, the existing arrangement (by which those persons only who take portraits professionally are subject to the restrictions of the Patent) will be in any way disturbed <2>

Yours respectfully

(signed) Roger Fenton

Notes:

1. The Calotype Patent (no. 8,842) taken out in 1841. WHFT did however give up all existing photographic patent rights in 1855–1856. See H.J.P. Arnold, William Henry Fox Talbot: Pioneer of Photography and Man of Science(London: Hutchinson Benham Ltd, 1977), p. 208.

2. See Doc. No: 07001.
