Sir
The Chancellor of the Exchequer desires me to acknowledge the favour of your letter of the 22nd. Mr Gladstone remembers with pleasure his very interesting visit to Lacock. With respect to your recommendation of Mr Oakeley for the Edinburgh Professorship, I am to say that the Candidates for the Chair of Music are many and good, but Mr Gladstone is sure that Mr Oakeley’s claims will have the best consideration of the Electors.
I am, Sir, yr obedt servt
