My dear Sir,
I hear from my gardener that your present of bulbs reached Spofforth last Saturday, and I return many thanks to you for them. He mentions a white Tri-Chronema amongst them. Am I right in apprehending that it is not one of the Cape bulbs, but a variety of the Italian plant which I recollect you having told me some years ago the you had brought from Naples? <1>
Ever yrs truly

1. WHFT was in Naples in 1823. It is possible that the recipient of this letter could have been WHFT's uncle, William Thomas Horner Fox Strangways, 4th Earl of Ilchester (1795–1865), botanist, art collector & diplomat. In Doc. No: 03722 Herbert asked WHFT for "an offset or seed of your Swiss plant", indicating that they did converse or correspond regarding plants.
