Translation:

Very dear Sir

I leave for Southampton tomorrow, but I would not like to leave London without thanking you again for all your kindness. I have received your letter of the 25th, and I send you several sheets of my paper with this letter so you may judge if it is good. I would be most delighted if you would be willing to send more of your paper through Mr. Bunsen so I can be more certain my apprenticeship with you will not have been entirely in vain.

I very much regret that I can no longer have the pleasure of seeing you, Mrs Talbot or your charming and amiable children again before I leave. I hope to see Lady Fielding and Miss Fielding again today.

Please congratulate your excellent poet, who is ironically called Death, because he has taken care never to die.

I have sent you my Inscriptiones Umbricae et Oscae. At least it will give you the correct material for your studies.

At your service.
R. Lepsius

I will also take an Englishman with me named Mr Bonomi whose drawings of hieroglyphs cannot be bettered.

I hope to have your camera obscura portraits this afternoon. I have had all the things I bought in Paris sent by coach. Nevertheless, the boxes did not arrive until yesterday. There were absolutely no other camera obscurae except the one which you can see; that made my choice easy; it cost 40 F.
