My Dear Sir
I am not acquainted with any instance of Aucuba having before ripened its fruit, which is a desideratum to Botanists. Indeed considering that the female only is known in Europe, I should not have anticipated such an event. The case to which you refer has I suppose been brought about by the individual on which the fruit has ripened having accidentally thrown some male flowers.
Faithfully yours
John Lindley
