Dear Sir,

As you are one of the Owners of Coverts in the Country lately hunted by Mr Horlock <1> I have been requested to ask if you would like to sign the enclosed Requisition to the Duke of Beaufort <2> to extend his Country into the Vale of Wilts.

The Country was declared vacant last year from Mr Horlocks Inability to contrive to hunt it and as we have reason to believe that the Duke would take it we are desirous of obtaining as many Names as possible to the requisition.

The enclosed contains the Majority of them but there will be several more to be added

To his Grace the Duke of Beaufort –

We the undersigned proprietors & occupiers, [sic] of coverts in the country formerly hunted by Mr Horlock, feeling much indebted to Your Grace, for your endeavours to shew sport in that portion of the country, ceded to Your Grace, at the Commencement of the last Season; venture to hope that your Grace will not only continue to hunt the same, but will consent to hunt the remainder of the country which is now vacant, and our best exertions shall be used for the preservation of foxes, & the promotion of sport –

1. A covert is a thicket that provides shelter to game. Knightley William Horlock (1802–1882), author and huntsman.

2. Henry Somerset, 7th Duke of Beaufort (1792-1853).

3. The 16 listed names are not signatures.

4. Henry Petty Fitzmaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne (1780–1863), MP, WHFT’s uncle.

5. John Bird Fuller (1801–1872), High Sheriff.

6. Paul Methuen, Baron Methuen (1779–1849), MP.
