Dear Talbot –
Thanks for your letter which is valuable like everything else that comes from you. I believe that there is only one opinion about the impolicy of going to war for the purpose of maintaining the old territorial lines in Italy. At least I have not heard more than one opinion expressed.
My prospects are still uncertain. But a few days must now decide whether I continue to be a politician, or retire to what I think a much happier life.
