My dear Talbot –
If I have been black-balled at the Travellers <1> will you put me up again?
Yours truly

Notes:
1. The Travellers Club was a gentlemans' club established in 1819 in London, catering to those who had visited foreign countries, diplomats posted to London and their guests. Elections to such clubs were done by secret ballot. A wooden box concealed the voter's hand and he could select one ball from either the white tray or black tray, placing his selection in a hole. If a black ball turned up in the group at the end it was fatal to the aspirant's chances. Mongomerie was up for election to this Club and was successful at least by 1828 - see Doc. No: 01762
