My dear Talbot

The specimen of part of a book which I now send you, comes for your inspection, because, though I consider myself right, I would fain hear in what particulars it appears wrong to those who can judge of it –

I propose to prefix to what I now send, a disputation on the text of [Greek text] and some specimens of similar parallel [illegible] taken from the Psalms & new Testament – with such observations as may serve to connect them. In the English you will see that my object has been, not to translate but to give the exact form of the greek [sic] without deranging the order of words, in any case.

Such objections as strike your mind I shall be thankful to hear, and to treat you as amicus curiζ –

The species of Psalms which this book resembles are those, chiefly, prefaced as [Hebrew text]. I suppose it will be enough to give a sample of three or four which most resemble this kind of arrangement, & a specimen of Isaiah to shew the general character of style –

I flatter myself that I can make out any unanswerable case for [Greek text] – my hope is to shew first the text & its state according to the MSS, of which I have prefixed a fac simile in the book, which I now send – Then the testimony of the versions, and then the negative testimony of such earlier writers as I have been able to press into the service.

So if you will think over your objections to my view of the passage, I will endeavour to obviate them while that portion is in the Press.

I hope this may find you not disinclined to intersperse a little Theology among your philosophies, and in the mean time

I remain always Yours affectly
