My dear Mr Talbot,
I have not been able to answer your letter before this as having been down to Clifton to see my mother I did not receive it until my return last night. Many thanks for your offer of hospitality which I shall be glad to accept when I come down to Lacock, but I do not contemplate coming just yet as I have already arranged with Mr Roach – If I had not heard from you I had intended coming writing to tell you that I am in correspondence with the Rev D. Ace DD vicar of Dacre in Cumberland and on Ulleswater, a Lord Chancellor’s living; he is anxious to leave exchange as his wife died at Dacre and he has not the heart to go back there, he is a distinguished man, and one whom I think you would be pleased with – The only difficulty is his age which is 55 but I have no doubt with the interest I can bring to bear on the Lord Chancellor that can be got over. If we can agree, and you consent to the exchange, I have no doubt the matter will be concluded in a matter of six weeks: of course the sooner the better, as going so far with it will be important to get settled before the cold sets in.
I found my mother much better than I expected: and very very kind to me. I hope you have written to her as you said you would –
Yours Truly
Edward P. Nicholl
