Royal Asiatic Society,

London,
27 April 1860.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for your letter; <1> I am sorry you cannot be of our Council, but I feared that you would not be able to come amongst us.

I will send your translation of the Bellino’s Cylinder to-morrow it is at my house, where I had taken it in order to compare with Grotefend’s copy, printed in 1850. But I do not think you are bound to extend your generous gift to the Society beyond your original offer. I do not say that the Society will not be glad to receive it.

You will say in your introduction to the [illegible] paper, I presume, that you use Oppert’s printed text as your original, as allusion to the British Museum work is stopped for the present. And I am thinking that if you make one article of all three translations, headed something in this way "Translations by H F Esq from Assyrian monuments" or with any other title you may prefer; and then put in the subject of each inscription as a sub-head, as printers call it, we shall escape the appearance of taking three separate articles on the same similar subjects from three separate one writers [sic], and massing them together. I can give any instructions to the printer you like, or read over your proofs, as I am in frequent communication with him. I did not know until yesterday that Harrison was doing the work but supposed you were employing some local printer.

I am Dear Sir yours faithfully
Edwin Norris
