Giacché me l’ha permesso la informo del mio stato. Ieri l’ho passata malissimo, cosicché il medico ha sospeso l’operazione temendo di allevare l’infiammazione. Mi sono però strascinato fuori dalla camera fino alle 9 della sera, poi me ne andai a letto, stanco a dir vero, ma forse meglio dacché ciò mi fece dormire discretamente e questa mattina alle dieci mi fu fatta la dolorosa cerimonia consistente in 6 stilletti lunghi un pollice e mezzo, che per dodici diferenti incisioni m’hanno introdotto nella circonferenza della parte lesa e che mi si sono fatti sentire segnatamente dove dovevano toccarmi l’osso con un dolore al di la della sofferenza. Ma come la cosa mi si ha fatto credere indispensabile ho dovuto fare di necessità virtù ed accondiscendere a lasciarmi operare. Ora per verità a riserva del dolore delle incisioni sia che lo brami sia che realmente sia così sto meglio e quando nulla avvenga in contrario che Dio <no’l?> faccia partirò per Lacock Mercoledì prossimo. Il dottore mi ordina che passando per Bath facci due o tre bagni al calore di 26 gradi assicurandomi che ciò finirà di guarirmi. Rimando perciò prima a V.S. se mi permette. Per questo abbi la compiacenza di scrivermi a Bath Posta Restante che arrivato andrò o manderò a prenderla. Voglia presentare i miei rispettosi complimenti alla di Lei stimabile famiglia e passo con vero sentimento di stima e gratitudine a segnarmi.

Most Esteemed Lord
Since you have permitted me to do so, I shall inform you of my state. Yesterday was quite terrible, to such an extent that the doctor suspended the operation, fearful that he would aggravate the inflammation. I nevertheless dragged myself from the room until 9 in the evening, then I went to bed, tired, truth be told, but perhaps better since this made me sleep quite well and this morning at ten I underwent the painful ceremony which consisted of 6 one and a half inch long stylets, which were inserted into the affected part through twelve different incisions and which I felt chiefly, since they must have touched the bone, with a pain which was unbearable. However as I had been made to believe that this is indispensable, I had to make virtue of necessity and consent to be operated upon. Now in truth apart from the pain of the incisions, be it because I so long for it, or because it is truly so, I am better and, should nothing occur to the contrary that God <illegible> I shall leave for Lacock next Wednesday. The doctor has instructed me to take two or three baths at a temperature of 26 degrees when I pass through Bath, assuring me that this will help cure me. I am therefore first replying to Your Lordship if you permit me. For this I would ask you to be so kind as to write to me Poste Restante in Bath which I shall go to collect or have collected upon my arrival. Please offer my respectful compliments to your esteemed family and with a true sentiment of esteem and gratitude I sign myself
