J’ai reçu votre aimable lettre écrite en route, et j’espère que vous avez été tous contens de votre voyage qui vous a offert de temps en temps des choses intéressantes. Dans les lettres que j’ai reçues il y a une lacune depuis Llangollen <1> jusqu’à Ludlow Castle. <2> Vous n’avez pas sans doute grimpé sur Castel Dinas Bran qui domine Llangollen, et où Owen Glendower <3> autrefois la terreur de l’Angleterre a bâti son chateau.
Je vous ai dit que je tendais une piège à Kossuth. <4> Il y est tombé dedans aujourd’hui et nous avons son portrait. C’est un homme qui a été beau dans sa jeunesse mais dont les traits portent l’empreinte des douleurs fatigues travaux sans nombre qu’il a soufferts. On n’est pas chef d’un peuple insurgé sans que l‘âme et le corps s’en ressentent bien lontemps après. Ses manières sont on ne peut plus courtoises et polies. Il a une longue barbe bien noire bien épaisse. Il est venu accompagné du Comte Francis Pulsky avec lequel il a quelquefois parlé Hongrois j’entendais les accens de cette langue pour la première fois. Cela ne ressemblait à rien. j’ai bien vite fait connaissance avec M. Pulsky et je l’ai invité la prochaine fois qu’il sera à Bowood <5> de venir voir l’abbaye.

Dear Mlle Amélina,
I received your friendly letter written during your journey, and I hope that you were all content with your trip which provided you with interesting things from time to time. In the letters I received from you there is nothing from Llangollen until Ludlow Castle. It is unlikely that you climbed up Castel Dinas Bran that overlooks Llangollen, and where Owen Glendower at one point the terror of England, built his castle.
I told you that I set up a trap for Kossuth. He fell into it today and we have his portrait. He is a man who was handsome in youth but whose traits bear the marks of weary pain from the numerous amount of work that he has undergone. One cannot be the leader of a revolted people without the body and soul feeling the effects a long time after. His manners could not be more courteous and polite. He has a long, thick dark beard. He came accompanied by the Count Francis Pulsky with whom he sometimes spoke Hungarian. I hear the accents of this language for the first time. It resembled nothing else. I very quickly made the acquaintance of M. Pulsky and I invited him the next time he will be in Bowood to come and visit the abbey.
