My dear Mr Talbot:
J’ai reçu une lettre de MM. Stilwell par laquelle j’apprends que vous avez bien voulu déposer chez lui, à mon compte, la somme de Cent-cinquante-cinq pounds, pour laquelle je vous prie d’accepter tous mes remerciements. Il m’engage à placer ces fonds, ajoutés à ceux qu’il avait déjà à moi appartenant, de quelque manière, mais il est bien difficile de savoir ce qu’il y a de mieux à faire quant à l’avantage et à la sureté de l’argent; ainsi donc, avant de répondre a M. Stilwell j’ai voulu vous consulter à sujet et savoir votre opinion, si cela ne vous ennuie pas trop de m’écrire quelque lignes: si vous pensez que je ferai mieux de m’en rapporter entièrement aux conseils de M. Stilwell je lui écrirai de suite pour lui donner carte blanche.
Mme Talbot vous a écrit et fait part des nouveaux plans et vous savez que vous le revenez mardi ainsi qu’Ela. Nous avons le bonheur d’avoir d’assez beau temps et toute celle semaine j’en ai pu jouir et sortir tous les jours.
Je viens de lire la lettre de Mr Whetstone (dans le Times) au sujet du Stereoscope. Il est bien extraordinaire que Sir D. Brewster dit, pu ainsi revenir sur ses opinions énoncées et imprimées en 1843 J’avais aussi lu la lettre de Sir David – Quel malheur que certains hommes scientifiques soient si peu disposés à rondre justice à que le mérite.
L’horizon politique déjà si chargé de images semble encore plus noir – qu’en sortira l’il?
Je vous ai toujours bien dit que Bedinguet n’était pas de bonne foi?

My dear Mr Talbot:
I have received a letter from Mr Stilwell from which I learn that you have been so good as to deposit the sum of One-hundred-and-fifty-five pounds with him to my account, for which I ask you to accept all my gratitude. He urges me to place these funds, along with those which he already had in my name, in some way, but it is most difficult to know what is best with regard to the advantage and security of the money; therefore, before replying to Mr Stilwell, I wished to consult you on this matter and to know your opinion, if it is not too much trouble for you to write me a few lines: if you think that I would do best to trust entirely in Mr Stilwell’s advice, I shall write to him forthwith to give him carte blanche.
Mrs Talbot has written to you and told you of the new plans and you know that you will see her on Tuesday as well as Ela. We are fortunate to have quite fine weather and all week long I have been able to enjoy it and to go out every day.
I have just read Mr Whetstone’s letter (in the Times) on the matter of the Stereoscope. It is quite extraordinary that Sir D. Brewster should have gone back on the opinions he set out and published in 1843. I had also read Sir David’s letter – It is so unfortunate that some men of science should be so ill disposed to give justice where it is due.
The political horizon which is already laden with clouds seems even blacker – what will come of it?
