I have again looked to the Notices Received from the Attorney General office of the Patents of Mr Spencer <1> and find the One applied for was in August 1840 was originally for Certain “Improvements in the process or processes of manufacturing metallic Cylinders and for engraving thereon and for engraving in Metals generally –”. This title was altered by the Attorny [sic] General on the 16th Septr 1840. “For Certain Improvements in the process of Engraving upon Metals by means of Voltaic Electricity’ – this is the one spoken of in the Literary Gazette <2> and of which you were acquainted on its commencement. – The next Patent that he had was the Picture frames which was applied for on March this year, the Specification of which is just enrolled. – The Patents for the Picture Frames relates only to that and other decorative purposes – The first claim is for Making picture frames the second for manufacturing moulds or patterns for ornaments used by Carvers & Gilders. The Third Claim is for a method of making obverse moulds in Copper for the purpose of creating decorative ornaments in Iron Moulds – 4th for covering me ttalic [sic] picture frames with Gold –5 To cover them with silver
6 To Do – platinum
7 To Do – tin

8 For a method of cleaning the surfaces of Iron that are to be covered with Copper by the Agency of voltaic electricity and for the method of covering the surfaces with copper when so cleaned.

9th For a method making surfaces or patterns on picture frames by the use of that Work (which is claimed in a Patent some years ago)

10 An addition to the composition now used by Carvers and Gilders of Caoutchouc in certain propositions – I have not thought it necessary to give you more than the general heads of the Specifications as it would be quite imposible [sic] to give you any of idea of the processes without sending you down a full description but should you require a description of any one part or of the whole we can send it down to you. – I will take care that your Letters are properly directed in future. – Mr Carpmael <3> is having the Agreement prepared between yourself and Professor Wheatstone. <4>
