J’ai envoyé mon Domestique au Collège Romain ^<1> pour s’informer des heures ou l’on peut trouver M^r l’Abbé Conti ^<2> vous saurez donc encore au bas de ce Billet l’heure qu’il convient de choisir

Je ne sais Monsieur si vous passez toutes vos Soirées dans le grand monde, s’il en était autrement mon desir de cultiver votre conaissance me ferait hazarder la proposition de venir quelques fois prendre une tasse de thé chez moi

Ma femme est presque tous les soirs chez elle, aura un grand plaisir à vous voir et nous pourrions ainsi nous entretenir au coin du feu de notre science favorite

Une soirée aussi complettement [sic] en famille n’a rien de bien attrayant dans une ville comme Rome aussi j’hézitais de vous [illegible deletion] faire une semblable proposition et il s’entend de soi même que ce ne serait que pour des [soirs?] ou vous n’auriez absolument rien de mieux à faire.

Sir

I felt much regret at not having been at home when you were so good as to visit me.

Your proposition was all the more welcome as it found me truly on the point of writing to you on the same subject and fixing with you a day for a [trip?] to the Observatory.

I sent my servant to the Collège Romain to find out the times at which one can find Father Conti you will thus know at the end of this note which time would best be suited to choose.

I know not Sir whether you spend all your evenings in society, were it otherwise my desire to cultivate your acquaintance would lead me to hazard the suggestion that you could come on occasion to have a cup of tea at my house.

My wife is at home almost every evening, will take great pleasure in seeing you and we could thus converse by the fireside about our favourite science.

Such a completely familial evening is not at all attractive in a town such as Rome which is why I hesitated before putting such a proposition to you and it goes without saying that it would only be for evenings when you had absolutely nothing better to do.
