Sir,
About the commencement of July last I received a letter <1> from you stating that you should find a difficulty in granting me a licence to practise the Calotype process in London but that you should be glad to know if I would like to practise elsewhere – I certainly should have preferred remaining in London but if you have granted an exclusive privilege to a gentleman you cannot I suppose allow me to do so – I should have replied long since to your note but have been obliged to be away from home to attend upon other business – I send some specimens and altho not done as I could wish I hope they may meet with your approbation – They were taken in from 20 to 25 seconds with a favorable light but bad apparatus but if you will allow me I will in a few days send you some others and I trust much better executed – I need hardly say the pictures I send are not in any way touched or worked up by hand – I should be obliged by an early answer whether I can be allowed to practise the art and
I remain Sir Your Mo: obt St
Wm Sherlock
H. F. Talbot Esq
