Lacock Wedny 7 Decr
My Dear Constance
Charles left this morning for Weston, with fine weather. I wrote to you on the 1st, and to Ela on the 5th. I received yours of Decr 2, and Charles received one from Monie which he answered by same post. I was sorry to see from Monie’s letter there was so much discomfort in the house owing to there being so many new servants. But I am sure that she herself must be invaluable at such a crisis. Mr Roach is to have a pension of £175 per Annum – He is greatly pleased and has written to thank Ld Granville. For though at one time his hopes had risen to £200, yet latterly he had felt desponding and thought it might be only £100 or perhaps only £70 or £80 – The same day he received an amusing letter from his Agent in London claiming a fee, on the ground that he had first introduced him to Mr Nicholl! The Agent “was informed” that they had now “exchanged livings” and he reminded Mr Roach that under such circumstances it was always customary to present a handsome fee to the Agent, who had brought it about. Mr Roach wrote a very civil reply, explaining the real circumstances of the case. He has sent you his Sermon preached last Sunday. I will forward it in a day or two, thinking to read it first.
I had a letter from Caroline a day or two <ill. del.> ago, all well. I think I will send it to you as it is long since she has written.
Your affte
Henry
