My dear Henry
Your letter of the 5th is forwarded to me here.
I believe Edward Nicholl owes several thousand pounds and I have heard that his mother had been doing what she could to assist, but his conduct in concealing his marriage so long has given her so much pain, that I do not know whether more can be expected from her. It is inconceivable to me how he can have got through so much money. I fear by the foolish mode of borrowing on insufficient security. Let me know what your opinion of his position is. I shall be in London next week.
Yours very truly
