Dear Sir,

I think Humphries had better call on Sir John Awdry <1> tomorrow Morng before 10. oClock and ascertain whether he will hear the Case to which you refer, at his own House, or in Chippenham, <2> after the meeting of the Guardians which he generally attends –

I think the y men may be punished as “idle & disorderly persons” under the Vagrant Act – I got an Impostor punished in that way myself last Week. I am expecting to receive the Writ for the election of a new member for the County, early tomorrow morning, if it arrives I must go to Devizes to meet the Sheriff for the purpose of proclaiming the Election, but I will leave full instructions at my office as to your rogues, if I do not return in time to attend to them personally.

I am Dear Sir Your obliged Servt
West Awdry

Thursday Eveng 8 o’C.

Notes:

1. Sir John Wither Awdry (1795–1878), JP & Chief Justice, Bombay Supreme Court.

2. Chippenham, Wiltshire: largest town near Lacock, 3 miles N.
