Monsieur:

Monsieur
Votre très humble et très obéissant serviteur

Dear Sir:

The letter dated the 10th instant, with which you have honoured me, could only have been extremely flattering for me; I hasten to reply to you, attaching opposite two vouchers marked with current prices, which contain the description of four types of microscope, of which, that marked no. 20 would be, I think, the most suitable for your needs. The large one, no. 19, although it makes more of an impression, will be too cumbersome for a traveller, with its case being more than 2 feet wide, more than one in depth, and about the same in height. In the construction of our microscopes, we have always worked to obtain a perfect sharpness and clarity, rather than a great enlargement; we have even corrected in it an error common to all microscopes, but even to our own, i.e. in illuminating any transparent object by reflecting the sun’s light, the edges of the object always present a network of brilliant and flickering points, which impeded observations. This flaw will now exist no longer. At the moment, we haven’t got a single model of no. 20. We have not even begun one; the shortest period of time before it could be entirely finished will be six months, but I can not however even be certain about that.

In any case, whether you decide on one or the other, please let me know and indicate to me an address where I could send it.

I have to honour to be
Sir
Your very humble and obedient servant

J. Utzschneider
