Etchilhampton near Devizes
28 March-1851-
Sir
The paper herewith sent – contains a notice of Sherrington Talbot Esq. who fell in a duel in the year 1685.
I have searched, but in vain for a more detailed account of that unfortunate affair; and am consequently induced to make this application, which I trust will not be regarded as intrusive.
In No 71 of the series of papers, of which a specimen is now sent, a more elaborate reference will be made to the partizans of King James in Wiltshire; and I should therefore feel highly gratified by having it put into my power to state any facts relating to the career either of Mr Sherrington Talbot himself or of his father Sir John Talbot Recorder & M.P. for Devizes, which you probably possess.
I may add that the papers in question contained under date 1645 many notices of Lacock and Colonel Roville’s adventures, gleaned from contemporary newspapers, and not to be found in Bowles’s Lacock or otherwhere in modern print: and that Sir John Talbot is mentioned as the bearer of the new Charter to Devizes in the year 1684/5 - (No 68) -
I am – Sir - Yours respectfully -
James Waylen
