My dear Talbot,

By your living so long in the neighbourhood of Derwentwater you became acquainted with some of our friends; and I educe that Mr Spedding <1> before going abroad communicated with you about foreign servants. I learn in this way that you spoke of a person who has accompanied you abroad, honest and a good carrier – Such a person I should be glad to hear of. & would have not to travel with a family, but to go directly to Rome with a single gentleman, who would stay there perhaps a month, and then return.

I have no doubt you are working at something interesting at present. I trust I shall hear of it in time –

Yours very truly
W Whewell
