Gènes
le 3 Novembre 1822

Monsieur.

Monsieur. Votre très humble et très obeissant Serviteur
Zach.

Genoa
3 November 1822

Sir.

I hope that you have also received in Florence my latest letter, in which I had told you of Mr Spooner’s reply; but this letter had only just been sent when I received yours of 24 October. I did not reply to it since I knew, as you had done me the honour of writing to me, that you will no longer be in Tuscany after the 1st of November, but rather in Rome. One of my old friends, whom you apparently know by name and repute already, and who is an amateur and distinguished proponent of Astronomy, was passing through Genoa on his way to Rome to spend the winter there, and I used this opportunity to send you an English copy of one of Mr Horner’s publications, which had already been included in French in the second Number of the Correspondance. It is Colonel Adrien de Scherer who will have the honour of presenting this to you. He already knows about you from the Correspondance. I have spoken to him about you, and he has told me of his wish to meet you. Since you both have the same taste, I should have said the same passion, you will also be very happy to make his acquaintance, and this is precisely what made me take the liberty of introducing Mr de Scherer to you. He is also a friend and fellow countryman of Mr Horner. He is not bringing any instruments with him, but at his home at St Gall, a small observatory has been erected, in which he has already made some excellent observations. I have published them in my two German and French Correspondances. If you receive your Equatorial from London during your stay in Rome, you can work together. Mr Scherer is very skilled in practical work.

I will not reply to your questions about Mr Massotti’s [sic] ellipse because you will see it all in a few days’ time in the third Number which will be coming out very shortly, and which I will have the honour of sending to you in Rome. I am still awaiting your reply concerning the matter with Mr Spooner. I will also mention to you that I have not yet received the book by this young English geometrician, which you were kind enough to send me from Leghorn. It would be a great shame if this book had been lost. Could you give me some information so I may lodge a complaint?

I reiterate the assurance of my highest regards, and have the honour to be with the deepest respect. Sir. Your very humble and very obedient Servant
Zach.
