Dear Henry

When do you come to town? I have received from Persia some cones <1> of Pinus orientalis which I suspect from being said to grow like a cedar & the character of the cones to be like the Canadian Hemlock Spruce their resin is very aromatic

Hooker <2> is ill I hear

Tell me in calculating chances scientifically is the basis of calculation perfectly arbitrary – & does the mode of calculation differ with the basis you may take?

Notes:

1. See Doc. No: 00154.

2. Sir William Jackson Hooker (1785–1865), Prof & botanist. He is known to have been ill in January 1837 [see Doc. No: 03438], but this date is inconsistent with the probable date of Doc. No: 00154.
